Notepad Neo

Walkthrough

From first open to finished note

Seven steps, in the order you will actually meet them. If you would rather scan a complete list of what the editor can do, the feature reference is laid out for that.

01

Open the editor

Go to notepadneo.com/notepad in any modern browser, on a computer, phone, or tablet. There is no account step and nothing to install — the page loads and the cursor is already in the document. If you have been here before, every tab you left open is restored from your browser's storage.

02

Open a tab for each thing you are working on

Click + to add a tab. Each one is fully independent — its own content, font, zoom level, and formatting — so a scratch pad and a long draft can sit side by side without interfering. Double-click a tab title to rename it, right-click to give it a colour or duplicate it, and close it with the × button.

03

Format your notes with the toolbar or keyboard shortcuts

The menu bar at the top organizes all commands into File, Edit, Format, Insert, and View menus. The collapsible format panel below it gives quick access to bold, italic, underline, font family, font size, text color, highlight, and lists. All common shortcuts like Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, and Ctrl+Z work out of the box.

04

Your notes save themselves automatically

Notepad Neo autosaves your work every 500ms as you type. You will see a "Saved ✓" indicator in the bottom status bar. For large notes, it automatically uses IndexedDB storage to handle more than the typical 5MB browser limit. You never need to click Save to keep your work.

05

Take a note somewhere else

Ctrl+S downloads the current note as a .txt file. File → Export offers HTML with formatting intact, PDF, and Word (.docx) — both of the last two are generated inside the app rather than by a service, so they work offline too. Ctrl+P opens your browser's print dialog. Nothing here requires an account.

06

Install for offline use on any device

Notepad Neo is a Progressive Web App (PWA). In Chrome or Edge, click the install icon in the address bar to install it on your desktop, phone, or tablet. Once installed, it works completely offline — your notes are always available, even without an internet connection.

07

Use the floating window to write while multitasking

Click View → Floating Window (Ctrl+Shift+F) to open a floating overlay that stays on top of other apps using the browser's Picture-in-Picture API. Take notes while in a meeting, watching a video, or reading documentation — without switching between windows.

Writing in Arabic, Hebrew, or another right-to-left script

Nothing to switch on. Each paragraph picks its own direction from its first letter, so an Arabic paragraph right-aligns and moves its bullets to the right while an English paragraph in the same note stays where it belongs. If a paragraph starts with a word in the other script and guesses wrong, pin it with the direction buttons in the Format panel. The setting survives export to Word.

The reason this is per-paragraph rather than a single document setting is written up in detail here.
